Colonel Carmen Amelio Robles, an Afro Mexican man, was a leader and notorious commander in the Mexican Revolution. He was born on November 3, 1889 as Amelia Robles Ávila in Xochipala, Mexico. In 1914, after registering into the army and dressing as a man, Amelio refused a wedding offer and asked to be recognized for who he was–Amelio officially announced his male identity. Legend has it, he could shoot with his right hand while steadying his cigar, in his left.
