Part III: Stimulation, Circulation, and Protection
Purification and Protection
Rosemary in an amulet or burned in the air was said to protect and purify a person from evil spirits, thieves and witches, and from negative energy. Rosemary was placed under pillows in order to repel bad dreams and also to remember important ones. In the same way that sage smudge stick is used to clear a home or place of negative energy, so can rosemary be.
In hospital wards in France, rosemary was burned to clear out the stench of the dead, during WWII. During the black plague, it was spread on the floors of people’s homes to prevent diseases from spreading. (Rosemary is also an insect repellant.)

Antibacterial In addition to spiritual purification it is known to purify the blood and entire body of toxins. Rosemary contains very powerful antioxidants that protect the body and the cells from harmful substances known as free radicals.
Liver The liver plays a central role in our metabolism and often acts as a sponge for many of the toxins that are carried through our body. Liver disorders are a side effect of toxins passed on through heavy use of pharmaceuticals and drugs (although sometimes genetic) Due to the antioxidants present in rosemary oil extract, scientists have discovered that rosemary can aid in the relief of jaundice and liver disorders, especially as a choleretic. It has also been found to protect the liver cells from being damaged. Pharmacologists researching the Antioxidant Activity of Rosemary found that Rosemary Extract Oil (REO) through increasing the bodies hepatoprotective effects by, “scavenging harmful free radicals,” and activating our body’s physiological defense system. Further, they found, the methanol extract may even prevent and reverse effects of liver cirrhosis.
Antidiabetes Another effect of the detoxifying action rosemary, is it is considered a very strong anti-diabetes medication. it is able to reduce levels of blood sugar in the body. This is true especially when combined with oregano.
Part of the reason Rosemary is so effective in curing all these health problems is that it helps improve circulation. In doing so, it helps us think better, it helps the body function better, and it helps the blood rejuvenate or stimulate all of our body to begin to work more effectively again.
Cardiovascular Health Furthermore, the reduction in inflammation in the cardiovascular system can help to boost heart health. In addition to being a symbolic herb of the heart, it is also one that protects the heart by enhancing blood circulation and working against cholesterol, as a cardiotonic, antihypertensive, and blood purification. In doing so it can also help promote weight loss. In Mexico, it was used to cure literal heartache.
Using rosemary oil in the bath helps stimulate the skin, encourages circulation and improves the blood flow of patients with artery clogging diseases as a result. (Rulffs W, Munch Med Wochensch. 126 (1984) 207.) In the same way, it also helps with sperm motility, which may be why there was a common belief that if a man didn’t like the smell of rosemary, he would not be a good lover.
